By 1:00 a.m., the executive war room of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois in downtown Chicago was operating at maximum capacity.

While Anna and Lily slept under twenty-four-hour federal witness protection at the Sterling estate, David Mercer and four senior prosecutors were executing a synchronized asset freeze against the entire Kensington commercial network.

On the digital projection wall, the Kensington Group’s corporate structure was being dismantled node by node:

KENSINGTON MARITIME FLEET (18 VESSELS): ARRESTED UNDER ADMIRALTY WRIT.

OFFSHORE TRUST #8812 (CAYMANS): $42,000,000 — FROZEN UNDER INTERPOL NOTICE.

GOLD COAST MANSION (LAKE SHORE DRIVE): SEIZED UNDER CIVIL FORFEITURE STATUTES.

“The financial rot goes back twenty years, Julian,” David Mercer reported, reviewing the live banking feeds. “Arthur Kensington had been using the proposed merger with Sterling Maritime to conceal eighty million dollars in counterfeit shipping collateral pledged to European lenders. If you had married Victoria on Saturday, that liability would have attached directly to your personal accounts.”

“They were using me to pay off their cartel debts,” Julian said, sipping black coffee, his eyes dark with exhaustion.

“They were going to bankrupt you, Julian,” David nodded. “And once the debt attached, Victoria would have filed for divorce under the irreconcilable differences clause, walked away with forty percent of your terminals, and left you holding the federal tax liens.”

Julian looked at his wristwatch. It was 1:45 a.m.

In less than six hours, the society editors of the Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Times would be printing their weekend features on the "Wedding of the Century."

“Call the press syndicates, David,” Julian commanded, setting his coffee down with an iron resolve. “Tell them the wedding at the Cathedral of the Holy Name is cancelled. And tell them to send their investigative reporters to the Dirksen Federal Building at 9:00 a.m. sharp.”
