“You think somebody deliberately damaged your wheelchair?”
“I think a chair serviced two days ago shouldn't lose alignment because it touched a stone.”
“Rafe checked it?”
“Afterward.”
“And?”
Santino's jaw tightened.
“One brake line had been altered.”
Emily slowly sat.
“Who knows?”
“Rafe. Me. Now you.”
“Victoria?”
“No.”
“Enzo?”
“No.”
Emily glanced toward the door.
“Why tell me?”
“Because whoever did it expected you to obey everyone else.”
She understood.
Nobody had helped because someone had given instructions.
“Who told them not to move?”
“That is what we're finding out.”
He pushed Daniel Taylor's folder toward her.
Emily opened it.
Invoices.
Manifests.
Bank transfers.
Then a handwritten note.
Numbers don't disappear. They move. Follow Pier 14. — D.T.
Emily whispered, “That's his handwriting.”
Santino watched her carefully.
“Your father discovered money being removed from Ferrara shipping accounts.”
“He tried to tell you?”
“He tried to tell my father.”
Emily looked up.
Santino continued.
“My father died before the meeting happened.”
“And you never investigated?”
“I did.”
“Not very well.”
Rafe entered before Santino could answer.
“We have a problem.”
He placed a tablet on the desk.
Security footage showed a maintenance worker entering the garage two nights before the party.
Emily leaned closer.
“Who is that?”
“We don't know.”
Santino pointed.
“Back up.”
Rafe did.
The man turned slightly.
Emily froze.
“Wait.”
Santino noticed immediately.
“You recognize him?”
Emily stared.
“I think so.”
“From where?”
“My father's funeral.”
Rafe stopped the video.
“You're sure?”
“He stood across the street the entire time.”
Santino exchanged a look with Rafe.
Emily pointed toward the man's hand.
“He wore that ring.”
A large square signet ring.
Rafe enlarged the frame.
His face hardened.
“What?”
Emily demanded.
Rafe looked at Santino.
Santino answered.
“That ring belongs to senior Ferrara household staff.”
Emily's stomach dropped.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning this didn't come from outside.”
That afternoon, Santino called Victoria and Enzo into his office.
Emily remained at the desk.
Victoria looked irritated.
“Why is your new secretary sitting in on a family meeting?”
Santino replied, “Because I asked her to.”
Enzo glanced at Emily.
Just once.
But she saw it.
Fear.
Santino noticed too.
“Enzo.”
“Yes?”
“Who handled wheelchair maintenance?”
“Rafe's department.”
Rafe shook his head.
“No.”
Enzo's face tightened.
“You requested a private contractor last week,” Rafe said.
“I did no such thing.”
Emily opened the calendar.
“Yes, you did.”
Everyone turned.
She rotated the monitor.
“Tuesday, 4:30. Contractor authorization. Your administrative code.”
Enzo stared at it.
“That could have been copied.”
“It could,” Emily agreed.
Victoria stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Santino looked at his sister.
“Is it?”
Victoria's eyes flashed.
“You think Enzo tried to hurt you?”
“I haven't accused anyone.”
“Not yet.”
Santino's voice became colder.
“Why are you defending him before I've asked a question?”
Victoria stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then Enzo did something Emily didn't expect.
He laughed.
Quietly.
“You always were clever, Santino.”
Rafe moved closer.
Enzo raised both hands.
“Relax.”
Santino's eyes narrowed.
Enzo looked directly at Emily.
“Your father was clever too.”
Emily went pale.
“You knew him.”
“Better than you realize.”
Santino's voice hardened.
“Start talking.”
Enzo smiled.
“No.”
Then he walked toward the door.
Rafe blocked him.
Enzo stopped.
“Move.”
Rafe didn't.
Santino said quietly:
“Nobody leaves.”
