Victoria remained standing.
Emily held her father's folder against her chest.
Santino spoke first.
“Three years ago, Daniel Taylor discovered missing money.”
Enzo said nothing.
“He traced it to Pier 14.”
Nothing.
“Yesterday someone interfered with my wheelchair.”
Still nothing.
Emily stepped forward.
“You were at my father's funeral.”
Enzo finally looked at her.
“No.”
“The man in the footage was.”
“That proves nothing.”
“Then why are you scared?”
Enzo smiled.
“I'm not.”
“You keep rubbing your thumb against your ring finger.”
His hand stopped.
Emily continued.
“My father did that when he lied.”
Santino looked at Enzo's hand.
The older man's smile disappeared.
Victoria whispered, “Enzo?”
He turned toward her.
“Don't.”
“Tell me she’s wrong.”
Enzo's eyes closed briefly.
Then he sighed.
“Your father wasn't stealing from the Ferraras.”
Emily's breath caught.
“I know.”
“He was helping me find who was.”
Santino leaned forward.
“What?”
Enzo looked at him.
“I recruited Daniel.”
Emily stared.
“My father worked for you?”
“He found irregularities. I asked him to keep investigating.”
“Why secretly?”
“Because I didn't know who inside this house could be trusted.”
Emily's anger rose.
“And when he died?”
“I failed him.”
Her voice cracked.
“You let everyone call him a thief.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“You didn't even know me.”
“I knew exactly who you were.”
Emily froze.
Enzo continued.
“I've known since the day you applied here.”
Santino turned sharply.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you allowed her into this house?”
“I needed to know whether Daniel had left anything with her.”
Emily stepped back.
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than denial.
Santino's expression became dangerous.
“You transferred her after the pool.”
“I was protecting her.”
“From whom?”
Enzo looked at Victoria.
Victoria's face went white.
“Don't look at me.”
“I wasn't.”
“Yes, you were.”
Enzo shook his head.
“I was looking behind you.”
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Thomas Keene.
Ferrara Maritime's chief financial officer.
Emily had seen him every morning since arriving.
Polite.
Quiet.
Forgettable.
Keene looked at the open folder.
Then at Emily.
“So Daniel had another copy.”
Rafe stepped between him and Santino.
Keene raised his hands.
“I didn't come here for trouble.”
Santino's voice remained level.
“You altered my chair.”
“No.”
“You stole from my company.”
Keene smiled faintly.
“Company accounting is complicated.”
Emily opened her father's notes.
“No, it isn't.”
Keene's smile vanished.
She held up three pages.
“My father traced every transfer.”
Keene stared at her.
Emily continued.
“You moved small amounts through twelve shell vendors, then consolidated them through Pier 14.”
Santino looked at Keene.
“How much?”
Emily answered.
“Over six years? Nearly eight million.”
Victoria whispered, “My God.”
Keene shook his head.
“You can't prove those accounts belong to me.”
Emily turned another page.
“My father could.”
She pointed to a handwritten sequence.
“He recorded authorization numbers.”
Rafe took the folder.
Keene stepped backward.
Santino watched him.
“You destroyed Daniel Taylor's reputation.”
Keene said nothing.
“You tried to remove the evidence.”
Still nothing.
Then Enzo spoke.
“I gave Daniel the Pier 14 records.”
Keene's face changed.
There.
Confirmation.
Santino saw it.
So did Emily.
Rafe quietly shut the office door.
Santino leaned back.
“Now we talk.”
