“Speak.”
“Hello, Dante,” Victor crowed, putting the call on speaker so it echoed through the cavernous warehouse. “I imagine you’re wondering why your favorite little pencil-pusher isn't answering her office phone tonight.”
A heavy, terrifying silence hung over the line. When Dante spoke next, his voice didn't sound human. It sounded like judgment day.
“Where are you, Victor?”
“South Chicago rail yards, Bay 4,” Victor smirked. “Come alone, bring your checkbooks, and maybe—just maybe—we’ll let the girl walk away with all her fingers intact.”
“I’m already in your parking lot,” Dante replied calmly.
Before Victor’s smile could even fade, the heavy steel roll-up doors at the far end of the warehouse exploded inward in a shower of sparks and shattered metal.
A sleek black Mercedes SUV tore through the wreckage, engine roaring like a caged beast, sliding across the concrete floor and coming to a violent stop forty feet from where I was kneeling.
The driver’s side door flew open, and Dante stepped out.
He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing corded muscle and raw, unadulterated fury. In his right hand, he held a customized Sig Nexter pistol, and his eyes were locked onto Victor with the cold, absolute certainty of an executioner.
“Kill her!” Victor screamed, panicking as he drew his own weapon and grabbed me by the hair, dragging me backward.
Before any of Victor’s enforcers could even raise their rifles, the darkness around the rafters erupted. Dante’s elite personal security detail—men who had been tracking Dante’s GPS coordinates the second my office sensors tripped—dropped from the overhead catwalks in a flurry of silenced gunfire.
Enforcers collapsed like felled timber, bullets snapping through the air with terrifying precision.
Victor raised his pistol toward my head, screaming in rage, but Dante moved with blinding, impossible speed.
Bang.
A single shot echoed through the warehouse.
Victor’s eyes widened in utter disbelief as the gun slipped from his limp fingers. He slumped backward, collapsing onto the concrete floor beside me.
The silence that followed was absolute.
I sat frozen on the damp floor, trembling from head to toe, adrenaline crashing through my system as the reality of what had just happened washed over me.
Footsteps crunched rapidly across the concrete.
Then Dante was there.
He dropped his pistol, falling to his knees right beside me. His strong, steady hands gripped my shoulders, pulling me violently against his chest as if he needed to physically verify that I was still breathing.
“Emily,” he breathed, his voice cracking with a raw, shattered vulnerability that tore straight through my heart. “Emily, look at me. Are you hurt?”
“I’m... I’m okay,” I sobbed softly, burying my face in the crook of his neck, feeling the heavy, frantic thud of his heart against mine. “Dante... how did you find me so fast?”
“I told you,” Dante whispered, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss against the top of my head as his arms wrapped tighter around me. “You keep my empire running. And you hold my heart. I would tear this entire city apart brick by brick before I let anyone touch you.”
