The remnants of the old North Side faction were dismantled, federal authorities quietly hauled away the remaining conspirators under anonymous tips provided by Vance legal counsel, and the Chicago underworld returned to a tense, stable peace.

I spent those three days recovering in the master suite of Dante’s Mercer Island-style estate on the shores of Lake Michigan. The room was bathed in warm autumn sunlight, overlooking the crashing waves outside.

My brother Lucas had been safely transferred to a top-tier private facility in Switzerland, fully funded by Dante, with a dedicated medical team ensuring he would never have to worry about care again.

On the fourth evening, Dante knocked softly on the bedroom door before stepping inside. He was holding a porcelain mug of chamomile tea, wearing a soft gray sweater instead of his usual intimidating business suits.

He walked over to the bed, setting the mug down on the nightstand, and sat on the edge of the mattress.

“How are you feeling?” he asked gently, his hazel eyes searching my face with tender concern.

“Like I survived a war,” I admitted, offering a small, tired smile. “Thank you, Dante. For everything. For Lucas... and for coming after me.”

Dante reached out, his thumb gently brushing across my cheekbone, wiping away a stray lock of hair.

“For nine years, I thought my life ended the day Clara died,” Dante spoke quietly, his voice heavy with the ghosts of the past, yet remarkably peaceful. “I thought I was cursed to live out my days as a ghost running an empire of ash. I stopped feeling. I stopped breathing.”

He looked down at my hand, lacing his fingers through mine.

“And then you walked into my office in the middle of an execution, looked down at a Persian rug, and lectured me about biohazard surcharges.”

I let out a soft, genuine laugh. “It was a very expensive rug.”

“It was the moment I started living again,” Dante whispered, leaning in close until his forehead rested gently against mine. “Emily... I never thought I would ever feel this way about anyone again. But I love you. And if you’ll let me, I want to spend the rest of my life keeping you safe, making you laugh, and proving that you never have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders alone.”

My heart soared. All the walls I had built around myself, all the exhaustion and fear, melted away in the warmth of his embrace.

“I’d like that, Dante,” I whispered against his lips.

When he kissed me, it wasn't a desperate grab for survival or a frantic rush of adrenaline. It was a promise—deep, tender, and eternal.
