The recording played.
A man’s voice filled the ballroom.
Calm.
Controlled.
Certain.
“Simone, if you are hearing this, it means the wedding failed.””
Simone stopped moving.
Darius watched her carefully.
“You know this voice?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The guests exchanged nervous looks.
Nia slowly backed away from the DJ booth.
Darius noticed.
“Nia?””
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know.””
“You knew about the recordings.””
“I knew Ava found something.””
“But not this?””
“No.””
The voice continued.
“You were never supposed to play the files in front of everyone.””
Simone’s face changed.
The confidence she had built all morning disappeared completely.
The recording wasn’t just exposing her.
It was warning her.
Darius looked at her.
“Who is that?””
Simone whispered.
“I don’t know.””
But nobody believed her.
Not even herself.
The recording continued.
“You promised you would follow the plan.””
The word echoed.
Plan.
Darius looked at Simone.
“What plan?””
She remained silent.
“Simone.””
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know this would happen.””
“That’s not an answer.””
The voice continued.
“If Darius learns the truth, everything falls apart.””
Darius’s expression hardened.
“The truth about what?””
The recording paused.
A strange electronic sound followed.
Then the voice said:
“The truth about why Ava was brought into his life.””
Everyone went still.
Nia grabbed the edge of a chair.
“No.””
Darius turned.
“What does that mean?””
Nia looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
But her voice lacked conviction.
Darius stepped toward her.
“You do.””
“I don’t.””
“You do.””
Simone suddenly spoke.
“Stop blaming her.””
Everyone turned.
Darius looked at her.
“You’re defending her?””
“No.””
Simone shook her head.
“I’m saying she wasn’t the only person involved.””
The words shocked everyone.
Nia stared.
“What are you saying?””
Simone looked at the screen.
“I’m saying someone wanted all of us in this room today.””
The recording continued.
“Simone, remember your instructions.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Make Darius sign.””
Darius froze.
The same words.
The words from Simone’s first recording.
The entire room remembered.
“Once Darius signs, make sure Nia never comes back.””
Darius looked at Simone.
“Sign what?””
Simone looked away.
He stepped closer.
“Sign what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to stop it.””
“Stop what?””
“I didn’t know how deep it went.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Simone looked at the guests.
At the flowers.
At the wedding she thought she could control.
Then she looked back at Darius.
“There was a contract.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Darius stared.
“What contract?””
Simone didn’t answer.
Nia did.
Her voice was quiet.
“The one that would separate you from Ava forever.””
Darius looked at her.
“What?””
The recording stopped.
Everyone waited.
The screen went dark.
Then another message appeared.
A final line.
*ONE PERSON IN THIS ROOM KNOWS WHERE THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT IS.*
Darius looked around the ballroom.
At the guests.
At Nia.
At Simone.
Nobody moved.
Then Ava, who had been sitting quietly near the front, suddenly stood up.
She was holding something in her hand.
Something she had taken from the USB case.
“Darius…”
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl walked forward slowly.
“I think I know who it is.””
Darius knelt down.
“What did you find?””
Ava opened her small hand.
Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.
Darius unfolded it.
And his face changed.
Because written on the paper was a name.
Not Simone.
Not Nia.
A name nobody expected.
A name that made the entire ballroom fall silent.
