Margaret Bennett entered Luca’s library without removing her coat.
She looked at me.
Then at Luca.
“I came for my daughter-in-law.”
Luca remained beside me.
“She decides where she goes.”
Margaret’s eyes returned to mine.
“Clare.”
She placed my wedding ring on the table.
“Daniel gave me this.”
My throat tightened.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“What did he say?”
“That your marriage was over.”
I laughed bitterly.
“He left out the mountain road?”
Margaret went pale.
“So it’s true.”
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
She sat down.
For the first time in eight years, Margaret Bennett looked old.
“I knew Daniel was moving money. I knew he was using companies under other names.”
“My name.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he’s my son.”
I stared at her.
“That’s your excuse?”
“No.”
She looked directly at me.
“That’s my shame.”
Luca said nothing.
Margaret opened her handbag and removed a folder.
“Daniel keeps copies of everything because he trusts no one.”
She pushed it toward me.
“Not even his mother.”
Inside were account ledgers.
Dates.
Transfers.
Names.
Michael Grant’s name appeared repeatedly.
“This could prove everything,” I whispered.
“It will.”
Margaret stood.
“I’m going to the authorities tomorrow.”
“Why now?”
Her eyes dropped toward my ring.
“Because financial crimes are one thing.”
She swallowed.
“Leaving his wife in a snowstorm is another.”
Luca spoke.
“You understand your son may go to prison.”
“Yes.”
“Then why come here first?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Because Daniel is coming.”
Marco’s head snapped up.
“What?”
“He knows Clare is here.”
Outside, headlights appeared beyond the gates.
Several vehicles.
Luca’s expression went cold.
“Marco.”
“Already locking the property down.”
I stood.
“No.”
Luca looked at me.
“No what?”
“I’m finished hiding.”
“Clare—”
“He wants me?”
I picked up my wedding ring.
“Then let him see me.”
Minutes later Daniel stood outside the front entrance.
He wasn’t alone.
Michael Grant stood behind him.
Daniel saw me through the open doorway.
His face changed.
“Clare.”
I stepped onto the covered porch.
Luca remained several feet behind me, his black suit and visible neck tattoos making it very clear whose property Daniel had entered.
“Come home,” Daniel said.
“No.”
“This man is manipulating you.”
I almost laughed.
“You abandoned me in the snow.”
“You were hysterical.”
“You stole my ring.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
Daniel glanced toward Luca.
“From him.”
Luca finally spoke.
“I didn’t forge her signature.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I wasn’t speaking to you.”
Luca’s tattooed hand rested casually at his side.
“You’re standing at my house. You’re always speaking to me.”
Michael stepped forward.
“Clare, legally, you should come with us.”
I stared at him.
“Legally?”
“Yes.”
“You mean like the legal documents you helped Daniel forge?”
Michael stopped.
Daniel turned toward him.
That tiny movement told me everything.
I held up my phone.
“Thank you.”
Daniel frowned.
“For what?”
“For confirming he was involved.”
Michael’s face drained.
Daniel finally understood.
We had recorded the entire conversation.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Daniel looked toward the road.
Then at his mother.
“You.”
Margaret didn’t flinch.
“Yes.”
His expression twisted.
“You betrayed your own son.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I finally stopped helping him betray everyone else.”
Daniel stared at me one last time.
“You think Moretti is going to save you?”
I stepped closer to Luca.
“No.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Then I finished.
“I saved myself.”
I looked at the memory card in my hand.
“He just gave me somewhere safe enough to do it.”
