Daniel Bennett was arrested before sunrise.

But he wasn’t finished.

Men like Daniel rarely accepted defeat.

They renamed it.

By noon, reporters were outside Luca’s gates.

The headlines were brutal.

MISSING WOMAN FOUND AT ALLEGED CRIME BOSS’S ESTATE.

Daniel’s attorney claimed I had fabricated everything.

Then a second accusation appeared.

I was having an affair with Luca Moretti.

I threw my phone onto the kitchen counter.

“That didn’t take long.”

Luca poured coffee.

“Scandal is cheaper than evidence.”

“You’re remarkably calm.”

“I’ve been accused of worse.”

“I noticed.”

He handed me the cup.

I looked at his tattooed fingers around the porcelain.

“Why haven't you asked me about your sister?”

“I figured you would when you were ready.”

I nodded.

“Show me her case.”

An hour later, Luca opened a file he had kept for years.

His sister Sofia had been twenty-four when Daniel convinced her to invest in a development company.

He transferred debt into her name.

Then walked away.

The structure was almost identical to mine.

“Daniel didn’t start with me,” I said.

“No.”

“How many others?”

“We don’t know.”

I looked at Marco.

“Then find out.”

Luca studied me.

“That could take months.”

“I have time.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“What are you planning?”

“To stop defending myself.”

I turned the laptop around.

“We attack his story with facts.”

Over the following weeks, investigators uncovered more victims.

A former business partner.

Two investors.

A retired couple.

Sofia Moretti.

Me.

Michael Grant accepted a deal and turned over documents.

Daniel’s empire collapsed.

But the moment that mattered most happened three months later.

I walked into federal court wearing a navy suit and no wedding ring.

Daniel sat across the room.

He looked smaller.

Not physically.

Just smaller.

When I finished testifying, he caught my eye.

“Clare.”

I stopped.

His attorney tried to silence him.

Daniel ignored him.

“You destroyed everything.”

I looked at the man I had once rearranged my entire life to please.

“No, Daniel.”

My voice didn’t shake.

“I stopped protecting what you destroyed.”

Then I walked away.

Luca waited outside.

Black tailored coat.

Dark suit.

Tattoo visible above his collar.

He opened the car door.

“How did it go?”

“He blamed me.”

“Of course.”

“And I didn’t care.”

That made Luca smile.

“Now what?”

I looked back at the courthouse.

“For the first time?”

I smiled.

“Whatever I want.”
