The ink on the page looked darker than it should have.
My mother’s handwriting.
Her final warning.
One name.
I stared at the unfinished sentence.
*Her name is…*
The paper shook between my fingers.
“Maya?””
My father’s voice sounded distant.
I couldn’t answer.
Because I knew.
Some part of me already knew.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Nicole was standing across the room.
Her face had lost all color.
And that was when I understood.
She wasn’t waiting to hear the name.
She was waiting to see if I already knew.
“Say it,” Dad whispered.
I looked at him.
Then back at the letter.
My voice barely came out.
“Nicole.””
The room went silent.
My father closed his eyes.
Not because he was surprised.
Because he was hurt.
Nicole immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel stepped backward.
“I knew it.””
Nicole looked at him.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I know Emily was investigating you before she died.””
My father looked at Nicole.
“Why?””
She laughed softly.
A broken laugh.
“You all think it’s that simple.””
Dad’s hands curled into fists.
“My wife died.””
“I know.””
“My daughter lost her mother.””
“I know.””
“Then explain why Emily was afraid of you.””
Nicole looked at me.
And for a second, I saw something I had never seen before.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“You want the truth?””
Nobody answered.
Nicole looked around the room.
“Fine.””
She sat down slowly.
“I never wanted Emily dead.””
My stomach turned.
The way she said it.
Like that was supposed to comfort us.
Dad stared.
“What does that mean?””
Nicole looked at the floor.
“Emily found out about the money.””
I frowned.
“What money?””
Daniel answered.
“Your grandmother’s trust.””
Nicole looked at him angrily.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Nicole sighed.
“Emily discovered Richard’s mother had created a trust for Maya. A large one.””
My father shook his head.
“That was years ago.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Nicole looked at me.
“She knew when Maya turned eighteen, that money would belong to her.””
I felt a chill.
“So?””
Nicole’s eyes hardened.
“So she started asking questions.””
“About you?””
“Yes.””
Daniel opened another file.
“She found evidence Nicole had been contacting lawyers before she even married Richard.””
My father looked stunned.
“You were planning this before we got married?””
Nicole didn’t respond.
That silence said everything.
I felt sick.
All those years.
All those family dinners.
All those fake smiles.
“You came into our family because of money.””
Nicole looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I understand perfectly.””
She stood.
“You think I’m some evil person who woke up one day and decided to ruin your life.””
“Didn’t you?””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely angry.
“You never gave me a chance.””
I laughed bitterly.
“I was eleven.””
“You hated me.””
“I lost my mother.””
The words cut through the room.
“You weren’t supposed to replace her.””
Nicole looked away.
That was the closest thing to an answer she could give.
Dad picked up the letter again.
“You knew Emily wrote this?””
Nicole nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And you kept it?””
“Yes.””
My father looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“Why?””
“Because she was going to destroy everything.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did Emily find?””
Nicole stared at him.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
She looked at my father.
Then at me.
“She found out I had been accessing documents I wasn’t supposed to see.””
“What documents?”” Dad asked.
“Financial records.””
My heart sank.
Nicole had not just wanted my inheritance.
She had been preparing for it.
For years.
Dad looked toward the door.
“Where is the original letter from Emily?””
Nicole didn’t answer.
“Maya?””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She smiled faintly.
“You think this is over because you found out my secret?””
The room went cold.
“What are you talking about?””
Nicole walked toward the window.
“Your mother left you one truth.””
She turned around.
“But she left me one too.””
Dad frowned.
“What?””
Nicole’s smile disappeared.
“She knew something about you, Richard.””
My father froze.
“What?””
Nicole looked at him.
“She knew you weren’t where you said you were that night.””
I felt the air leave the room.
Dad stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Daniel looked confused.
“What are you saying?””
Nicole stared at my father.
“Emily didn’t die because she was scared of me.””
She paused.
“She died because she found out what Richard did before the accident.””
Nobody spoke.
My father’s face went pale.
And for the first time…
I wondered if Nicole had been hiding the truth.
Or if she had been hiding half of it.
