The accusation hung in the room.

Like smoke.

Like something poisonous.

My father didn’t move.

“Tell me you’re lying.””

Nicole looked at him.

“I’m not.””

I watched his face.

The same face that had looked broken when he discovered the fake messages.

The same face that apologized to me that morning.

Now it looked terrified.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Dad.””

He finally looked at me.

“Maya, I can explain.””

Those words hurt.

Because they were the exact words guilty people said in movies.

Not innocent people.

Daniel looked between us.

“Richard, what happened that night?””

My father sat down.

Slowly.

Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.

“Your mother and I had an argument.””

I stared.

“About what?””

He looked at his hands.

“Nicole.””

The room went silent.

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Dad swallowed.

“Emily had found out Nicole was stealing from the family business.””

Nicole immediately shouted:

“That’s not true.””

Dad ignored her.

“She wanted to confront you.””

Daniel looked at Nicole.

“You knew?””

Nicole said nothing.

Dad continued.

“Emily told me she was going to meet Nicole that night.””

I felt dizzy.

“Then why did you say you were at work?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I lied.””

The confession hit harder than anything else.

“Why?””

Dad looked at me.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

He closed his eyes.

“I followed your mother.””

Nobody spoke.

“You followed her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought she was leaving me.””

The words shocked me.

My father had always been the strong one.

The person who fixed everything.

But now he looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

“I saw her meeting someone,” he said.

“Who?””

He looked at Nicole.

Her face changed.

“No.””

Dad continued.

“Your brother.””

My eyes widened.

“Uncle Mark?””

Dad nodded.

“They were talking about the business.””

Nicole interrupted.

“Richard, stop.””

“No.””

His voice was stronger now.

“I spent years protecting you.””

Nicole went silent.

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would Emily meet Mark?””

Dad looked at the floor.

“Because they discovered money was missing.””

The pieces started connecting.

Nicole’s obsession with money.

The trust.

The documents.

The lies.

My mother had been searching.

And Nicole had been afraid of what she would find.

“But what happened after that?”” I asked.

Dad looked at me.

“That’s the part I never told anyone.””

My throat tightened.

“What?””

He took a deep breath.

“I got to the road where your mother crashed.””

My blood ran cold.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Dad…”

“I saw the car.””

His voice broke.

“I saw the accident happen.””

Nobody moved.

“Then why didn’t you help her?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

My father looked destroyed.

“I did.””

He pulled out his phone.

Opened an old photo.

A picture of the accident scene.

“I called emergency services.””

Daniel looked at the image.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

Dad looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“There’s something wrong.””

He zoomed in.

Everyone gathered around.

The photo showed my mother’s car.

And another vehicle nearby.

A dark SUV.

My father stared.

“I never saw that car.””

Daniel looked at Nicole.

“Did you?””

Nicole said nothing.

And that silence told us everything.

Dad stood.

“You were there.””

Nicole backed away.

“Richard…”

“You were there.””

“I was trying to help.””

“You were there when my wife died.””

Nicole’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””

The words froze everyone.

Daniel whispered:

“What did you just say?””

Nicole covered her mouth.

Realizing what she had admitted.

Dad stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Nicole shook her head.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She looked at me.

And then she said something I would never forget.

“Your mother wasn’t supposed to die.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

A voice I had never heard before.

But the first words she said made my blood run cold.

“Maya, your stepmother is not the only person who lied to you.””
