By midnight, the grand ballroom was completely empty. The guests had fled into the chilly Lake Forest night, eager to spread the shocking news across Chicago’s elite social circles. The engagement of the decade was dead, killed in a single evening by a red folder.
I sat in the small, warm kitchen of the servants' quarters, holding a mug of tea while Lily slept peacefully in the adjacent bedroom. The adrenaline that had sustained me throughout the chaotic evening was finally wearing off, leaving me feeling exhausted and hollow.
The kitchen door creaked open, and Nathaniel walked in.
He had discarded his tuxedo jacket and bow tie. His white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and his dark hair was slightly messy. He looked less like a billionaire CEO and more like a man bearing the weight of the entire world on his shoulders.
"Is Lily asleep?" he asked softly, taking a seat at the old wooden kitchen table opposite me.
"Yes," I replied, lowering my gaze. "Mr. Cross... I should pack our things. After what happened tonight, it’s better if we leave."
"Leave?" Nathaniel looked at me in disbelief. "Elena, why would you leave?"
"Because Vanessa’s father is a powerful man. He will ruin this estate if I stay here. And... I know people are talking. They think I leaked that folder to destroy your engagement."
Nathaniel leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Did you?"
I looked him dead in the eye. "I didn't even know that folder existed until tonight, Mr. Cross. I was upstairs fixing the linens in the guest suite when Lily snuck downstairs."
Nathaniel let out a long, weary breath. "I know you didn't. Because the person who gave me the key to that folder's digital backup was my private security director half an hour ago. He caught Vanessa’s assistant trying to burn the duplicate files in the estate incinerator."
I stared at him, stunned. "Her own assistant?"
"Vanessa promised her assistant a kickback that she never delivered," Nathaniel explained, his eyes filled with deep regret. "Elena... I spent five years building this business, traveling back and forth to Europe, trusting the wrong people to manage my home. I had no idea what Vanessa was doing to you and the staff while I was away."
He reached across the table, his fingers hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently covering my hand. His touch was warm, send a sudden shiver through my spine.
"The folder revealed everything, Elena," Nathaniel said softly. "It documented how Vanessa slashed your healthcare benefits when Lily was sick last winter. How she forced you to work sixteen-hour shifts under threat of termination. How she used my name to intimidate you."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. I had kept those struggles hidden for so long, swallowing my pride every single day just to ensure my daughter had a roof over her head and food on her table.
"I had to protect Lily," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I didn't have anywhere else to go after her father passed away."
"You don't have to run anymore," Nathaniel said, his grip on my hand tightening slightly. "Starting tomorrow, Vanessa and her family are facing a formal forensic audit. And as for you and Lily... you will never be treated as second-class citizens in this house ever again."
Before I could reply, the kitchen phone rang sharply, shattering the late-night quiet.
Nathaniel answered it, his expression instantly darkening as he listened to the voice on the other end.
"What do you mean she’s at the gate?" Nathaniel asked, his voice dropping an octave into pure anger.
He hung up the phone and looked at me. "Vanessa isn't going down without a fight. She just brought three news crews to the front gate of the estate."
