Outside the iron gates of the Lake Forest estate, bright camera lights cut through the thick November fog. Vanessa stood in front of a cluster of reporters, wearing a designer coat, her eyes red from calculated tears.

"Nathaniel Cross is being manipulated!" Vanessa cried into the microphones, her voice echoing down the driveway. "A disgruntled employee inside his house planted fabricated documents to sabotage our family alliance! My father’s investment firm has done nothing wrong!"

Inside the estate's security booth, Nathaniel watched the live television broadcast on a bank of monitors. I stood behind him, my heart pounding against my ribs as I saw my own name floating across the news ticker at the bottom of the screen.

LOCAL HOUSEKEEPER ACCUSED OF SABOTAGING BILLIONAIRE’S ENGAGEMENT.

"She's trying to spin the story before the police press charges against her father," Nathaniel’s chief of security, Thomas, said firmly. "If she controls the news cycle overnight, stock in Cross Meridian Hospitality will drop ten percent by tomorrow morning."

"She thinks she can intimidate me using the press," Nathaniel said, his eyes cold and focused. He turned to face me. "Elena, I need you to stay inside with Lily. Don't look at social media. Don't open the doors."

"Nathaniel, wait," I said, catching his arm as he turned to leave. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to put an end to this lies once and for all," he said quietly.

Nathaniel walked out of the security building alone, stepping straight through the small pedestrian gate into the blinding glare of the news cameras.

The reporters swarmed him immediately, thrusting microphones into his face.

"Mr. Cross! Is it true your engagement was called off because of a maid?"

"Mr. Cross! Did Vanessa Lowell embezzle three million dollars?"

Nathaniel raised one hand, and the chaotic crowd fell silent instantly. The sheer authority he projected was absolute.

"Tonight, an illegal attempt was made to slander an innocent worker in my home," Nathaniel announced clearly, looking directly into the primary news camera. "Elena Rossi has been a dedicated, honest employee of this estate for five years. Her four-year-old daughter was verbally asNextlted and physically restrained tonight by Vanessa Lowell."

Vanessa gasped, stepping forward. "Nathaniel! How dare you slander me on live television!"

"It isn't slander when it's recorded on high-definition security footage, Vanessa," Nathaniel replied calmly, pulling a sleek black USB drive from his pocket. "This drive contains the full video and audio from the ballroom tonight. It shows your conduct. It also contains the complete audit logs linking your personal bank account to the stolen healthcare funds."

He turned to the lead reporter from the Chicago Tribune. "I have already submitted these files to the Cook County State's Attorney. Arrest warrants for financial fraud and corporate embezzlement are being processed as we speak."

Vanessa’s face turned ghastly pale. She stumbled backward, nearly tripping over her high heels as her lawyer hurriedly pulled her toward a black SUV.

The reporters went wild, shouting questions, but Nathaniel turned his back on them, walking back through the gates. The heavy iron bars slid shut behind him, locking the chaos of the outside world away.

When he walked back into the main house, I was standing in the grand foyer, holding a glass of water for him.

"You didn't have to defend me on live news," I said softly, handing him the glass. "You could have handled the corporate fraud quietly."

Nathaniel took the glass, his fingers brushing against mine. "I spent five years ignoring what was happening right under my roof, Elena. Defending you and Lily wasn't just corporate policy. It was the right thing to do."

He looked into my eyes, and for a second, the distance between employer and employee seemed to completely vanish.

"Starting tomorrow," Nathaniel added, "things are going to change around here."
