Noah told Adrian to wait for the tactical team.

Adrian did not.

He entered the estate through an old drainage path Luis once showed him as a teenager.

Mud ruined his suit.

Thorns cut his hands.

He did not feel any of it.

The carriage house lights glowed through the trees.

Adrian moved behind the stone wall and looked through a side window.

Mara sat tied to a chair.

Vanessa sat across from her, one cheek swollen.

Frank stood near the door.

Evan paced with the gun.

“You said he’d bring the drive,” Evan snapped.

Frank looked at his watch. “He will.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You really believe that?”

Frank turned on her.

“You were useful when you followed instructions.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“I followed instructions for three years.”

Mara stared at her.

Vanessa looked away.

Evan said, “And you got greedy.”

“You told me Eleanor only needed to be scared.”

“You put the drug in her tea.”

“You gave it to me!”

Mara went still.

Adrian’s heart pounded.

There it was.

A confession.

Partial.

Messy.

Real.

Frank stepped closer to Vanessa.

“You were supposed to get control of the trust after the wedding. Instead you pushed Mara off a balcony and turned Adrian against you.”

“I did not push her.”

Mara’s head snapped up.

Vanessa looked directly at her.

“I grabbed you.”

“You threatened me.”

“Yes.”

“You cornered me.”

“Yes.”

“You said I would never leave the house.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“I was trying to scare you into giving me Eleanor’s letter.”

“You reached for me.”

“You stepped backward!”

Mara’s breathing changed.

Memory moved across her face.

Adrian saw it even from outside.

Vanessa continued.

“I caught your wrist.”

Mara whispered, “You let go.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I panicked.”

Frank gave a disgusted laugh.

“This is touching.”

He pulled a second gun from inside his jacket.

Then he aimed it at Vanessa.

“You were always the weakest part of this.”

Vanessa’s face emptied.

Evan turned.

“Frank, what are you doing?”

“Cleaning up.”

Mara shouted, “No!”

Adrian moved.

He smashed the window with a stone.

Everyone turned.

“Adrian!” Mara screamed.

He dove through the broken frame.

Evan fired.

The bullet tore into the wall.

Adrian hit him shoulder-first.

The gun skidded across the floor.

Frank swung toward Adrian.

Then Vanessa kicked his knee from the side.

Frank stumbled.

Mara tipped her chair backward into his legs.

Noah and the tactical team burst through the front doors.

“Drop the weapon!”

Frank raised his gun.

Three officers aimed back.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then Frank smiled.

“You have no idea how deep this goes.”

He lifted the gun toward Mara.

A shot exploded.
