Mara heard the gunshot before she understood who had fired.

Frank jerked backward.

His weapon fell.

He collapsed beside the workbench.

Noah stood ten feet away, arms extended, smoke curling faintly from his pistol.

“Don’t move!” officers shouted.

Evan lay face-down on the floor with Adrian’s knee against his back.

Vanessa had dropped to both knees.

Mara’s chair was still tipped sideways.

Everything became noise.

Boots.

Commands.

Sirens.

Someone cut Mara’s wrists free.

Adrian was beside her a second later.

“Look at me.”

She did.

His face was streaked with dirt and blood from a cut near his temple.

“You’re hurt,” she said.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“So are you.”

She looked down.

The rope had cut both wrists.

Adrian pulled her against him.

For one moment, she let herself disappear into the safety of his chest.

Then she remembered Vanessa.

Mara pulled back.

Vanessa sat against the wall with her hands visible, crying silently.

No officer had handcuffed her yet.

Adrian followed Mara’s gaze.

His face hardened.

Vanessa looked up.

“I didn’t push her.”

Adrian said nothing.

“I swear to you.”

“You drugged my mother.”

Vanessa flinched.

“I didn’t know it would kill her.”

“You shut off the cameras.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened Mara.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me for six months.”

“Yes.”

Each answer sounded smaller.

Adrian crouched in front of her.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked at him for a long time.

Then something in her broke.

“Because I was tired of being poor.”

Mara blinked.

Vanessa laughed once through tears.

“You want a better answer? There isn’t one.”

She had grown up with a mother who worked nights and a father who disappeared. Scholarships got her into elite schools, but she hated being the girl who counted every dollar while everyone around her treated money like air.

Then she met Evan.

He taught her how to move through wealthy rooms.

How to listen.

How to spot fear.

Frank found them later.

He had been stealing from the foundation for years in small amounts.

Vanessa became his way into the trust.

“And Eleanor saw me,” she said.

Adrian’s voice was flat. “She saw exactly who you were.”

Vanessa cried harder.

“Yes.”

Mara felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

An agent approached.

“Ms. Hart, stand up.”

Vanessa did.

Before they handcuffed her, she looked at Mara.

“I grabbed your wrist.”

Mara stared.

“I know.”

“I could have held on.”

Mara’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa whispered, “I chose not to.”

Adrian stepped between them.

The handcuffs closed.

As Vanessa was led away, she turned back one last time.

“Ask Daniel who really introduced me to Frank.”

Adrian’s face changed.

Because Daniel had sworn he had met Frank only after Vanessa.
