Adrian read the sentence three times.

The paper shook in his hand.

Mara said his name softly.

He ignored her and kept reading.

Eleanor’s handwriting was unmistakable.

Sharp slanted letters.

No wasted words.

“Vanessa has been pressuring me to change the family trust. She wants control of the Cole Foundation and access to the land holdings after your marriage. I refused.”

Adrian stopped.

Noah watched him carefully.

“Keep going.”

Adrian swallowed.

“I hired a private investigator because money has been disappearing from charity accounts connected to Vanessa’s consulting firm.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Adrian read faster.

“Luis saw her meeting a man in the greenhouse after midnight. I believe he is helping her move records out of the house.”

There were account numbers.

Dates.

Photos.

In one photograph, Vanessa stood beside a tall man Adrian recognized from a charity gala.

Evan Rourke.

A financial adviser who had once worked for Eleanor.

He had been fired two years earlier for what Adrian had been told was “a personality conflict.”

The letter continued.

“If something happens to me before I can bring this to Adrian, give the evidence to him and to no one else. I have not yet told him because his wedding plans have made him defensive, and I am trying to separate my fear from my dislike of Vanessa.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

His mother had been trying not to interfere.

Trying to respect him.

Trying not to become the controlling parent he had accused her of being.

The guilt was immediate and brutal.

Mara touched his arm.

“You didn’t know.”

He looked at her.

“I told her she was jealous.”

Mara said nothing.

That was worse.

Noah pulled the USB drive from the case.

“We need a clean laptop. Not one connected to your home network.”

“I have one in the truck.”

They returned to Noah’s vehicle and opened the files.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Photos.

One folder labeled MEDICAL.

Inside were screenshots of messages between Vanessa and someone saved as E.R.

The earliest message was dated eight months before Eleanor’s death.

VANESSA: She won’t sign.

E.R.: Then stop asking nicely.

VANESSA: I need a solution that looks natural.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Mara whispered, “Oh my God.”

Another message.

E.R.: I know someone who can get it.

VANESSA: No mistakes.

Then a later message, sent the night Eleanor died.

VANESSA: She’s down. Cameras are off. Come through the service gate.

Adrian’s face went numb.

Noah reached for the laptop.

“Stop.”

Adrian pulled it away.

“There’s more.”

The next message had been sent at 10:03 p.m.

E.R.: Luis saw me.

Vanessa replied:

THEN DEAL WITH LUIS TOO.
