Noah called federal investigators he trusted.

Not local police.

Not estate security.

Not anyone connected to the foundation.

By noon, the guesthouse had become a quiet command center.

Phones rang.

Documents were photographed.

The USB drive was cloned twice.

Dr. Larkin agreed to turn over copies of Eleanor’s lab work through legal channels.

Adrian sat at the kitchen table with both hands wrapped around a cup of cold coffee.

Mara sat across from him.

“You should sleep,” she said.

“So should you.”

“I tried.”

“So did I.”

Neither had.

Adrian stared out the window.

“I spent three years thinking Vanessa was ambitious.”

Mara said nothing.

“I thought that was a good thing.”

“It can be.”

“I thought my mother disliked her because they were alike.”

“They weren’t.”

“No.”

He looked at Mara.

“You knew.”

“I knew Eleanor was afraid of her near the end.”

“Why didn’t you force me to listen?”

Mara’s eyes sharpened.

“I tried.”

He flinched.

She immediately softened.

“I’m sorry.”

“No. Don’t be.”

Mara looked down at her bruised hands.

“You were in love.”

“That doesn’t excuse being blind.”

“No. But it explains why Vanessa worked so hard to keep you comfortable.”

Before Adrian could answer, Noah entered with his phone in his hand.

“We found Luis.”

Adrian stood so fast the chair scraped backward.

“Where?”

“New Mexico.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

The word hit Adrian like a physical force.

“He’s scared. He’s been living under his cousin’s name.”

“Why didn’t he come forward?”

“He says a man followed his daughter to school.”

Mara closed her eyes.

Noah continued.

“He’ll talk, but only if we go to him.”

“I’m going.”

“So am I,” Mara said.

“No.”

She looked at Adrian.

He was about to argue.

Then he stopped.

She had earned the right to stop being protected by people who excluded her from decisions.

“Fine,” he said. “But you stay beside me.”

Mara almost smiled.

“Deal.”

They flew west that evening.

Luis met them in the back room of a small church outside Albuquerque.

He looked older than Adrian remembered.

Smaller somehow.

He hugged Mara first.

Then he faced Adrian with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Cole.”

“For what?”

“I saw her that night.”

Adrian’s heart pounded.

“Vanessa?”

Luis nodded.

“She came out of your mother’s bedroom.”

“With Evan?”

“No.”

Luis looked down.

“With someone else.”

Adrian felt Noah go still beside him.

“Who?”

Luis raised his eyes.

“Your brother.”
