The silence in the safe room was deafening.

Luca stared at his mother-in-law.

“Evelyn,” Luca said softly. “What did you do?”

Evelyn didn't look away. She held the ticket to Switzerland in her trembling hands.

“Grace was suffering, Luca,” Evelyn wept. “The cancer was aggressive. The treatments weren't working. She was in constant agony.”

David took a step toward his wife, horror dawning on his face. “Evelyn, no.”

“She begged me, David!” Evelyn screamed, tears pouring down her cheeks. “She begged me to let her go peacefully before Sophie had to watch her wither away into a skeleton!”

I covered my mouth in shock.

Evelyn hadn't murdered her daughter out of malice. She had performed a mercy killing.

“I paid Harrison to administer the aconite,” Evelyn confessed, dropping the ticket. “Vanessa found out about it. She blackmailed me. She said if I didn't help her frame David for the embezzlement and clear her path to marry you, she would tell the police I murdered my own child.”

Luca’s world shattered.

The woman he had protected, the grandmother he had fought to keep at his table tonight, was the one who ended his wife’s life.

“You let me mourn,” Luca whispered, stepping back from her. “You let my daughter believe her mother was stolen by cancer.”

“I saved her from pain!” Evelyn cried.

“You murdered her!” David roared, grabbing Evelyn by the shoulders. “You took my daughter from me!”

“She was dying anyway!” Evelyn sobbed.

Luca didn't yell. He didn't raise his hands.

He walked over to Evelyn.

He reached out and gently unclasped the heavy diamond necklace she was wearing. It was an heirloom Grace had given her years ago.

“You don't deserve to wear her memory,” Luca said coldly, dropping the necklace into his pocket.

He looked at me.

“Emma. Lock her in the safe room. Do not let her out until the police arrive.”

I nodded, my hands shaking.

Luca turned to David.

“You want justice for your daughter?” Luca asked.

David wiped his tears, his eyes hardening into pure steel. “More than anything.”

“Then come with me to Lake Geneva. We have a hostage to rescue.”

Thirty minutes later, Luca’s private helicopter touched down on the frozen lawn of the Lake Geneva cabin.

The wind howled through the pine trees. The cabin was dark, save for a single light in the living room.

Luca and David approached the front door, weapons drawn. Marco and the strike team surrounded the perimeter.

“Vanessa!” Luca shouted, kicking the heavy wooden door open.

Inside, Isabella was tied to a wooden chair in the center of the room, gagged and terrified.

Vanessa stood behind her, pressing a pistol to Isabella’s temple.

“You’re too late, Luca!” Vanessa screamed, her hair wild, her expensive gown ruined by soot and snow. “The money is transferring now! If you shoot me, she dies!”

Luca slowly lowered his gun.

“The money isn't transferring, Vanessa,” Luca said calmly. “I froze the accounts an hour ago.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened in panic. “You’re lying!”

“Evelyn confessed,” David stepped forward, his voice booming through the cabin. “She told us everything. About Harrison. About the blackmail. It’s over, Vanessa.”

Vanessa realized her leverage was completely gone. She had no money, no escape route, and a dozen guns pointed at her.

She let out a hysterical sob and moved the gun away from Isabella’s head.

But she didn't drop it.

She aimed it directly at Luca.

“If I’m going down,” Vanessa shrieked, “I’m taking you with me!”

Before she could pull the trigger, a single gunshot echoed through the cabin.

Vanessa’s eyes went wide. The gun slipped from her fingers.

She collapsed onto the hardwood floor.

Standing in the doorway behind her, holding a smoking pistol, was Isabella. She had managed to free her hands while Vanessa was distracted by Luca and David.

Isabella dropped the gun, bursting into tears.

Luca ran forward, pulling his sister into his arms.

“I’ve got you,” Luca whispered, holding her tight. “It’s over.”

The long nightmare was finally finished.
