(One Year Later)

The dining room of the Moretti mansion was filled with warm, golden light.

There were no sixty-person engagement dinners. No manipulative fiancées. No secrets hidden in the shadows.

Tonight, the table was set for five.

I stood in the kitchen, arranging a platter of fresh bread, wearing a simple, elegant blue dress.

I wasn't a maid anymore. I was the estate manager, and Sophie’s legal guardian and tutor. Luca had kept his promise. My mother’s medical debts were paid in full, and my brother had opened his own contracting business with Luca’s backing.

“Emma?”

I turned around.

Sophie walked into the kitchen. She was thirteen now, taller, and smiling. The heavy grief that used to follow her like a shadow had finally lifted.

“Dinner is almost ready, sweetheart,” I smiled.

“Dad says we can’t start without you,” Sophie said, taking my hand.

I followed her into the dining room.

Luca sat at the head of the table. He looked relaxed, the harsh edges of the mafia boss softened by a year of peace and healing.

David sat to his right. After Evelyn was sentenced to prison, David had moved into the guest house. He had rebuilt his relationship with Luca and became the grandfather Sophie desperately needed.

Isabella sat across from him, laughing at a joke David had just told.

“Take a seat, Emma,” Luca smiled, gesturing to the chair beside his.

I sat down.

It felt entirely surreal, but also perfectly right. I wasn't just an employee anymore. I was part of the family.

Luca raised his glass of wine.

“To family,” Luca said softly. “The one we lost, and the one we found.”

We clinked our glasses together.

As we ate, the conversation flowed easily. No tension, no fear. Just the simple joy of people who had survived a war and chosen to rebuild together.

After dinner, Sophie and David went to the living room to play chess. Isabella excused herself to make a phone call.

I stayed in the dining room, helping to clear the plates out of habit.

Luca gently caught my wrist.

Not hard. Just a warm, reassuring touch.

“You don't have to do that anymore, Emma,” he said quietly.

I looked at him. The intense, dark eyes that used to terrify me now made my heart beat a little faster.

“Old habits,” I smiled.

Luca stood up. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

“I have a new habit I’d like to start,” he said.

He opened the box.

Inside rested a simple, elegant diamond ring. It wasn't flashy or ostentatious like Vanessa’s had been. It was classic and timeless.

“Emma,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “You stood up for my family when no one else would. You protected my daughter. You saved my life.”

I stared at the ring, tears springing to my eyes.

“I don't want you to be my estate manager anymore,” Luca whispered. “I want you to be my partner. In everything.”

I looked up into his eyes.

“Yes,” I breathed.

Luca smiled, a genuine, blinding smile, and slipped the ring onto my finger. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me, sealing the broken pieces of the past forever.
