Three months passed.
The cold winter melted away into a radiant New York spring. Cherry blossoms bloomed along the pathways of Prospect Park, and the city breathed with fresh, warm energy.
Inside the Starlight Diner, life moved with a joyful, rhythmic energy. The diner had become the official gathering place for the Vance Foundation’s staff, legal team, and local neighborhood families.
On a warm Saturday morning, Sadi sat at booth 4, wearing a soft floral silk dress. She was twenty-four months past Stella's birth, but today her face held a soft, radiant glow that Roman knew instantly.
Stella, now over two years old, sat on the burgundy vinyl seat beside her mother, happily coloring a drawing of a bright blue star with her crayons.
Roman stepped out from the diner kitchen wearing a dark linen shirt, holding a tray with two fresh mugs of hot coffee and a small plate of warm fruit tarts.
He set the tray down, sat in the booth across from Sadi, and handed her a mug. "You've been quiet all morning, Sadi. Are you thinking about the new clinic expansion in Harlem?"
Sadi smiled—a soft, secret, breathtaking smile that made Roman’s heart skip a beat.
She reached into her purse, pulled out a small, velvet-wrapped box, and slid it across the table toward him.
Roman frowned gently, looking at the box. "What is this? It's not my birthday."
"Open it, Mr. Moretti," Sadi whispered, her dark eyes shimmering with happy tears.
Roman opened the velvet box. Sitting inside was a tiny pair of hand-knitted white baby booties, along with a small medical printout showing a clear ultrasound scan.
Roman froze. His large hands trembled slightly as he picked up the tiny booties, his eyes darting from the printout to Sadi’s glowing face.
"Sadi..." Roman gasped, his voice choking with deep, overwhelming emotion. "Are you...?"
"Stella is going to be a big sister," Sadi smiled softly, a tear trickling down her cheek. "Due in November."
Roman let out a deep, booming roar of pure, unadulterated joy that echoed through the entire diner! He leapt up from the booth, picked Sadi up into his arms, and spun her around in a warm, passionate embrace while the diner staff and customers burst into loud applause and cheers!
Stella clapped her tiny hands, giggling happily. "Baby! Baby!"
Roman lowered Sadi down gently, framing her face in his hands, kissing her lips with a fierce, unconditional love that made the rest of the universe disappear.
