Daniel and Anna arrived at the hotel before sunrise.

The building had been renovated several times, but room 417 still existed.

The manager reluctantly gave them access to old records.

They discovered that Anna's father had checked into the hotel three years earlier.

But he had not checked out.

Someone else had used his key afterward.

That person was Richard Blackwood.

Anna felt sick.

“He came here after my father.”

Daniel nodded.

“According to the records.”

They searched the old room.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Then Anna noticed a loose panel beneath the desk.

She pulled it away.

Inside was a small envelope.

Her father's handwriting was on it.

“For Anna.”

She opened it.

There was a photograph and a short letter.

“My daughter,

If you're reading this, I failed to keep the truth buried.

I discovered that Richard Blackwood wasn't acting alone.

Someone inside the Whitmore organization helped him.”

Daniel froze.

“Someone in my family?”

Anna continued reading.

“I couldn't determine who.

But I found proof that the money was being transferred through an account controlled by a trusted executive.”

At the bottom was a name.

Thomas Reed.

Daniel's chief financial officer.

Daniel stared at the paper.

“Thomas has worked for my family for twenty years.”

“Then we need to know why.”

Suddenly, they heard footsteps outside.

The door handle moved.

Daniel quickly turned off the lights.

Someone entered.

A man stood in the darkness.

Daniel recognized him.

Thomas.

Thomas looked around.

“Where is it?”

Anna held her breath.

Thomas searched the room.

Then he made a phone call.

“They found the letter.”

A voice answered.

Thomas whispered,

“Then we have a problem.”

Anna's eyes widened.

Daniel silently recorded everything on his phone.

Thomas left.

They waited several minutes before moving.

Daniel looked at Anna.

“We have enough to expose him.”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because he isn't the person giving orders.”

Daniel frowned.

“How do you know?”

Anna pointed toward the floor.

Thomas had dropped something.

A business card.

The name on it was Victoria Blackwood.

Daniel stared at the card.

Victoria wasn't just protecting her father.

She was involved.

Maybe she had known everything from the beginning.

And perhaps the humiliation at the gala wasn't about a spilled drink at all.

It had been a warning.

A warning that Anna was getting too close.

But Anna was no longer running.

She looked at Daniel.

“Let's finish this.”
