Nobody wanted to believe it.

Not even after seeing the footage.

Because sometimes the truth is easier to accept when it comes from strangers.

But when it comes from someone who sat beside you at dinner…

someone who hugged you…

someone who called you family…

it feels impossible.

Daniel stared at my mother.

“Mom.””

She didn’t look up.

“Say something.””

Her hands trembled.

“I can explain.””

Nobody moved.

Those four words made everything worse.

Because innocent people usually say one thing first.

“I didn’t do it.””

My mother didn’t.

She said she could explain.

My father looked devastated.

“Margaret.””

She slowly lifted her head.

“I never wanted anyone hurt.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“You changed the agreement.””

“Yes.””

The confession was quiet.

But it destroyed the room.

My father stepped back.

“Why?””

My mother looked at Daniel.

“Because I was protecting you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I mean it.””

“You lied about my child. You helped destroy my marriage. You changed my inheritance.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to save your future.””

“My future?””

Daniel pointed around the room.

“Look at what you did.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“When your father created that condition, I knew it was wrong.””

My father looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you wouldn’t listen.””

The accusation hit him.

Hard.

My father didn’t respond.

My mother continued.

“You always believed the company came first.””

“That’s not true.””

“It was.””

The room went quiet.

Because maybe everyone knew a little part of her accusation was true.

My father had spent his entire life building an empire.

Sometimes people became numbers.

Sometimes feelings became inconvenient.

But changing a legal agreement?

That was something else.

Daniel looked at her.

“You wanted Victor to inherit the company?””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

She looked toward Claire.

“Because of Michael.””

Everyone froze.

Claire whispered:

“What?””

My mother looked at her.

“You weren’t the only one hiding something.””

Claire stepped back.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother’s voice dropped.

“Michael wasn’t just your doctor.””

The air changed.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“He was working with Victor.””

Victor immediately turned.

“That’s a lie.””

My mother looked at him.

“Is it?””

Victor’s expression became unreadable.

Daniel looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

My mother pointed toward the folder.

“The paternity test wasn’t discovered by accident.””

Claire looked horrified.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

My mother swallowed.

“The day after you lost the baby.””

Claire’s face fell.

“You were watching me.””

“No.””

My mother shook her head.

“I was investigating.””

“Why?””

“Because Michael called me.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Victor.

Then at Claire.

Then back at his mother.

“What did he tell you?””

My mother hesitated.

“That Claire wasn’t the only person involved.””

Victor stepped forward.

“Margaret.””

She ignored him.

“He told me someone was trying to destroy Daniel.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

My mother looked at Victor.

The room froze.

Victor’s face changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

“Be careful.””

My mother stood.

“I spent months protecting this family.””

She pointed at him.

“But you were the one who started this.””

Victor shook his head.

“That’s ridiculous.””

My mother laughed sadly.

“No.””

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a phone.

“I recorded our conversation.””

Victor’s expression changed.

“What?””

She pressed a button.

A recording began playing.

Victor’s voice filled the room.

“I need Daniel removed before the board meeting.””

Everyone listened.

The recording continued.

“His marriage falling apart would be enough. If the agreement activates, everything transfers.””

Daniel looked at Victor.

“You planned this.””

Victor stepped back.

“That recording is incomplete.””

My mother smiled sadly.

“Of course you would say that.””

Victor’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“No.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I understand exactly.””

The recording continued.

Then came a sentence that made Claire cover her mouth.

A sentence nobody expected.

A sentence proving Victor had known the truth from the beginning.

“I don’t care what happens to Claire. She was only ever useful because she was vulnerable.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

Because the man she thought was helping her…

had been using her all along.
