“It’s my name.””

Ava’s voice was barely louder than a whisper, but in the silent ballroom, everyone heard it.

The screen on the DJ console glowed against the dark surface.

A file sat open.

*AVA_CARTER_FINAL.*

Three words.

A child’s name.

And the word “final” sitting beside it like a warning.

Darius stared at the screen.

Then at Nia.

Then back at Ava.

His face changed slowly, like his mind was trying to catch up with something his heart already feared.

“Nia,” he said quietly.

“Why is our daughter’s name on that drive?””

No one moved.

The guests who had come to celebrate a marriage were now watching something much deeper unfold.

Ava looked between the adults.

“Mom?””

Nia’s eyes filled with tears.

She reached toward her daughter.

“Ava, come here.””

But Ava stepped back.

Not because she was afraid of her mother.

Because she was confused.

“You told me I was doing the right thing.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You said Darius had to know.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you scared?””

That question broke something in Nia’s expression.

For years, she had protected Ava from adult problems. She had hidden painful conversations, changed subjects, and smiled through moments when she wanted to fall apart.

But now there was nowhere left to hide.

Darius looked at Simone.

“You knew about this?””

Simone’s jaw tightened.

“I knew there was something.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

Darius let out a bitter laugh.

“The truth? We’re standing in the middle of our wedding because a seven-year-old found recordings about my family, and you’re telling me you knew something?””

Simone looked away.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

She didn’t answer.

Ava touched the microphone.

“Can we just listen?””

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl looked nervous again.

But she stood her ground.

“I brought it because I thought hearing it would fix everything.””

Nia’s face crumpled.

“Oh, Ava.””

The DJ console waited.

The file was ready.

Darius looked at Nia.

“Is there anything I need to know before she presses play?””

Nia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Darius nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

Ava pressed the file.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a video appeared.

The ballroom screen turned on.

Everyone gasped.

It wasn’t a recording of Simone.

It was a recording of Ava.

A younger Ava.

Maybe five years old.

She sat on a couch in a small room, holding a stuffed rabbit.

Darius froze.

He recognized the room.

It was his old apartment.

The apartment where he and Nia had lived before everything changed.

The video showed little Ava looking toward someone off-camera.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Ava, what did your mom tell you?””

The child version of Ava looked confused.

“She said Daddy was busy.””

Darius stopped breathing.

The voice continued.

“And do you know why Daddy is busy?””

Little Ava shook her head.

“Because he doesn’t love us?””

The entire ballroom went silent.

Darius looked at Nia.

His eyes filled with shock.

“No.””

Nia covered her mouth.

“Darius…”

On the screen, little Ava hugged her stuffed rabbit.

The woman behind the camera spoke again.

“Who told you that?””

The child answered.

“Mommy said Daddy chose someone else.””

Darius stepped back.

His hand moved to his chest.

“No…”

Simone looked at Nia.

“You let him believe that?””

Nia’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Simone said.

“I think I understand perfectly.””

Darius looked at Nia.

“Is that true?””

Nia couldn’t look at him.

“Darius…”

“Did you tell her I left because I didn’t love her?””

Nia shook her head quickly.

“I never wanted her to think that.””

“But she did.””

“I was angry.””

The admission landed like a slap.

The guests stared.

Darius’s voice became quieter.

“How long?””

Nia wiped her tears.

“I was hurt.””

“How long did you let my daughter believe that?””

“I corrected it later.””

“When?””

Nia didn’t answer.

Darius looked at Ava.

His expression broke.

Ava looked down.

“I thought you didn’t want me.””

The words were small.

But they destroyed him.

Darius immediately moved toward her.

“No.””

He knelt down.

“Ava, no.””

She looked at him.

“I thought maybe you forgot me.””

Darius shook his head.

“Never.””

“But Mommy said…”

“I know what she said.””

His voice cracked.

“But she was wrong.””

Nia looked away.

The pain in her face showed that she knew it too.

Simone watched silently.

For the first time, she wasn’t the only person with secrets exposed.

Darius stood slowly.

Then he looked at the USB drive.

“Why is this on here?””

Nobody answered.

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Then another file appeared.

A message.

Not audio.

Not video.

A document.

Darius stepped closer.

The title appeared.

*THE PERSON WHO CHANGED THE DNA RESULTS.*

His face went pale.

Nia immediately grabbed Ava’s shoulder.

“No.””

Darius turned.

“What did you say?””

Nia looked terrified.

“I said no.””

“Why?””

Because for the first time, Nia looked less afraid of losing Darius.

And more afraid of what he was about to discover.
